More Fun with Latin

Here are a few more Latin words that you already know, and the English words that developed from them. The basis for this set of words is the Vulgate reading of St. John Chapter 1.

principio = "Beginning/first." As in a "principle" part in a play.

Verbum = "Word." As in "verbal."

nihil = "Nothing." As in "annihilate" or "nihilism."

tenebris = "Darkness." As in "tenebrous."

missus = "Sent." As in "dismissed" or "mission."

nomen = "Name." As in "nominal," or "nomenclature."

venit = "Come." As in "adventurous."

per = "Through/because of." We use this Latin word in conversation, as in, "I did this per your request."

mundum = "World." As in "mundane."

cognovit = "Know." As in "recognize."

carnis = "Flesh." As in "carnage," or "carnal." (think about what this might mean with the word "carnival")

viri = "Man." As in "virile."

habitabit = "Dwelt." As in "habitation," or "habitable."

vidimus = "Saw." As in "video."

quasi = "As though." This word is still used in our English language as-is.

plenum = "Full." As in "plenary."
