Latin is Easy!

Just for fun, here is a list of Latin words that you probably already know, whether you are aware of it or not. Once you see how those words have come over into the English language, you'll smack your head and say "of course!"

For my list of Latin words, I'm using the Creed as my basis:

Credo = "I believe." As in the word "credible," or the reverse, "incredible."

unum = "One." As in "united," or "union."

Deum = "God." As in "deity."

Patrem = "The father." As in "patrimony," "patristic," "paternal," or even "patriotic."

omnipotèntem = "all-powerful." Omni as in "omniscient," "omnipresent"; potentem as in "potent" and "potentate."

factòrem = "maker/creator." As in "factory."

caeli = "heavens." As in "celestial."

terrae = "the earth." As in "terrain."

visibìlium = "visible." This one should be obvious.

invisibìlium = "invisible." Likewise, pretty obvious.

Dòminum = "Lord." As in "dominating," or "dominant."

Fìlium = "Son." As in "filial."

natum = "Born." As in "pre-natal."

lumen = "Light." As in "illuminated," or "luminous."

verum = "True." As in "verified," or "veracity."

salùtem = "Salvation." As in "salutary." Kinda makes you wonder about the word "salutations," doesn't it?

Sancto = "Holy." As in "sanctuary," "sanctified," and "sanctity."

sub = "under." As in "submarine," "subway," and "sub-par."

passus = "Suffered." As in "passion."

sepùltus = "Buried." As in "sepulchre."

tèrtia = "Third." As in "tertiary."

sedet = "Sits." As in "sedentary" or "sediment."

dèxteram = "Right hand." As in "dexterity" - I'll leave you to work out the implications of that. It's quite interesting if you think about it.

ìterum = "Again." As in "iterate" and "re-iterate."

judicàre = "Judge." As in "judicial."

mòrtuos = "Dead." As in "mortal," and "mortuary." (how about the word "mortified"?)

regni = "Kingdom." As in "reign."

finis = "end." As in "final," or "finite."

vivificàntem = "Life-Giver." As in "vivacious," "vivify," and even "vibrant."

simul = "Together with." As in "simultaneous."

locùtus = "Spoken." As in "locution," and "eloquent."

Ecclèsiam = "Church." As in "ecclesiastical."

peccatòrum = "sins." As in "peccable" and "peccant."

exspècto = "await." As in "expect," or "expectant."

Now your Latin vocabulary is larger. Not bad, eh?
